Alias Grace by Margaret AtwoodThis is a featured page

Alias GraceIn 1843, a 16 year-old Canadian housemaid named Grace Marks was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Grace. Was she a spurned woman who had taken out her rage on two innocent victims, or was she an unwilling victim herself, caught up in a crime she was too young to understand?

Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Grace spent the next 30 years in jails and asylums.

In Alias Grace, Atwood reconstructs Grace's story in fictional form and has created an extraordinarily potent tale of sexuality, cruelty and mystery.

Winner of the 2000 Booker Prize.

Most of us enjoyed this novel as a thoroughly good read (one member found it a complete bore and far too long). It kept us wondering and was not a trial to read given its length. Many of us wanted to believe Grace was innocent, but one or two members of the group felt sure she was guilty as she came across as being so clever! We did have some problems with the novel- we felt that at times some of the chance encounters were a little too convenient (eg when Grace meets up with Jeremiah again). We also found some discrepancies in the novel- Grace is not supposed to be very literate and yet she writes such an accurate letter to Dr Jordan at the end.
On the whole, a novel most of us enjoyed.
