What a fantastic story! Nearly all of us agreed that this novel took us right into the heart of Renaissance Florence- its beauty and its flaws! We liked the character of Alessandro a lot and felt sympathetic to her situation as a talented woman who is restricted by her society. Some of us felt some of the descriptions were a little too real and a little too graphic!

I loved the narrator of this book, and the way she is written, her voice and story kept me interested throughout. As Alessandra’s story unfolds so does the story of Venice and its troubled times, not knowing much about this period of history I found this fascinating. Unfortunately the book trailed off towards the end, not living up to its earlier sections. However it was a book I couldn’t put down.
