Brighton rock
A gang war is raging through the dark, seedy underworld of Brighton. Pinkie, fighting for leadership, is only seventeen yet he has already proved his ruthlessness in the brutal killing of Hale, a journalist. Untouched by human feeling, Pinkie is isolated from the rest of the world, a figure of pure evil. Believing he can escape retribution, he is unprepared for the courageous, life-embracing Ida Arnold, who is determined to avenge Hale's death.

Graham Greene's gripping thriller exposes a world of loneliness, pain and fear, of life lived on 'the dangerous edge of things'.

This has been described as one of Greene's finest novels. It was published in 1938, and is set in the Brighton underworld. The main character is a young man called Pinkie, who leads a small gang of criminals. It is a disturbing tale of deception and murder. What struck me ,and my reading group colleagues, is that Greene manages to convey the dark mood of the novel without resorting to explicit descriptions of violence, sex , or bad language. As one reads on, the choice of title becomes clear by the use of cleverly woven motifs and symbols. Brighton Rock cannot be described as happy or uplifting. The words I would choose are 'gritty ' and 'bleak', but utterly brilliant!
