Many moons ago when my children were at school this book was on their reading list for GCSEs. Because of this I assumed it would be dull, dull, dull. I thought it would be like my own school reading list, boring!
I was wrong. Although the start was a bit jolly hockey sticks and just too twee, I soon realised that it was a humorous take off of the gothic nineteenth century English novels. A sort of 'Frankenstein' meets 'Carry on'.meets 'Jeeves and Wooster' Innocent harmless fun from a bygone time. What can be more joyful and less taxing. A good read without angst. |
