On the whole our reading group found this novel to be very well written, enjoyable and incredibly insightful on human character. We were amazed at Cunningham's ability to write from a woman's viewpoint and found the way he drew on elements of Woolf's 'Mrs Dalloway' highly original. He took 'Mrs Dalloway' as his inspiration and what has been realised is a novel that is original in its own right. We found it clever, but in no way inaccessible. We also found it moving.
Nearly every member enjoyed the novel, but one member found the book to be irritating in places-it was felt that Cunningham could not write nearly as well in this style as Woolf and some of the American spelling and over use of words such as 'like' were irritating to this member. By the end of the novel though, she had found that the book had moved her - the ideas of how one minute or one hour can change everything were poignant.
On the whole, thoroughly enjoyed and the novel provoked an excellent and enjoyable discussion.
