Nearly all of us agreed that we enjoyed the story and found some of the observations on relationships and marriage both funny and poignant. But we also found the novel difficult to get into and it took some perservering initially. This was mainly because the language is so heavily descriptive and without breaks - there is hardly any conversation. We also found some of the characters' motives hard to understand and some of us did not understand Fermina's changing attitudes to Florentino. We felt it was probably the kind of novel that needs to be read more than once to fully appreciate it. Well worth a read if you persevere. If you are thinking of reading it, you will certainly get more out of it by looking into the history of Columbia where it is set.
