Only boy for me by Gil McNeilThis is a featured page

Only boy for meMost people would think Annie Baker has it all: an idyllic life in the country and a fabulous job as a film producer. And so would she, if it weren't for the men in her life. Her six year old son Charlie gets traumatised if she buys the wrong kind of sausages. Her tempestuous boss Barney is a Great Director, but keeps getting stuck with dog food commercials, and as for Lawrence; he just wants to get her fired. And then she meets Mack.

Hilarious and poignant, Gil McNeil's novel will make you laugh and cry.

This title was chosen by another female staff member of our group - she said she chose the 'girliest' book she could find on the list as she thought it would broaden the prisoners' horizons!
And she was quite right. Every single prisoner in the book group thoroughly enjoyed the book, except for one, Gareth, who said he just couldn't get past page 21.

Some said it reminded them of home-like things and of their kids, many of whom were growing up on the outside while their dads lived out their lives on the inside. Tony said it had made him cry. Andy said that it had made him laugh out loud, which a book hadn't done for years. All agreed that the portrayal of the child was 'spot on'. A few men were embarassed by the girly purple cover and had been careful not to be seen reading the book in public! and all said that they would never, ever had picked up the book to read of their own accord, but were glad that they had.

I personally probably enjoyed the book least in our group, apart from Gareth. I took an instant dislike to that Mac character...

Many of the men said that it dealt with home-like things they remembered and made them think of their kids, many of whom were growing up on the outside while their dads were spending their lives on the inside. Tony said it made him cry in some places, and laugh in others. Andy said it made him laugh out loud and it was years since a book had made him do that. Several said they had been embarassed at the girly purple cover and tried to hide it at first!
