Having read this novel six months ago, I was interested to watch the film. It didn't disappoint. The film is very faithful to the book with the same emotions generated in the watcher/reader. Kate Winslet is excellent as Hanna . The only comment I would have is that the trial happens all too quickly and if you hadn't read the book, you could miss a lot of the details. In the book it is also much clearer with more incidents to hint at that Hanna is illiterate.

This would not have been a book I would have chosen for the title. It sounds a little dull to me. Fortunately I am a member of Portsea book club and this book was the choice of a group member.
A poignant account of a relationship between an older woman and young boy in a war torn European capital city. Because the book is non- judgemental I was able to be the same. Actions have consequences and the twist is in the final chapter. I love a book that allows me to question my standards and beliefs this does so without patronising. Easy and pleasurable reading - |
