Rendezvous and other stories by Daphne Du MaurierThis is a featured page

RendezvousThe fourteen haunting stories collected here span the whole of Daphne du Maurier's writing career and explore every human emotion: an apparently happily married woman commits suicide; a steamer in wartime is rescued by a mysterious sailing ship; a dull husband breaks loose in a surprising fashion; a con girl plays her game once too often; and a famous novelist looks for romance, only to meet with bitter disappointment. Each meticulously observed tale shows du Maurier's mastery of the genre and provides pleasure for a variety of moods.

The beauty of short stories, no pages of preamble, straight into the emotions, characters, plot. Good easy reading. The Rendezvous was the best, the snobbish uptight Scrivener full of self importance about his literature. I inferred his books were about relationships, something he knew nothing about in reality. His attitude to Annette changed dramatically once the meeting took place. His fantasy about her was soon shattered when they finally met and she had taken up with the beach boy.

The final shattering of illusions was the visit to the cinema when he realised the film was his life empty and bereft. A good Daphne Du Maurier book with good perceptive study of characters.
