Rough Music by Patrick GaleThis is a featured page

Rough music by Patrick GaleA subtle and entertaining tragicomic love story. Julian as a small boy is taken on the perfect Cornish holiday. When glamorous American cousins unexpectedly swell the party, however, emotions run high and events spiral out of control.

Though he has been brought up in the forbidding shadow of the prison his father runs, though his parents are neither as normal nor as happy as he supposes, Julian's world view is the sunnily selfish, accepting one of boyhood. It is only when he becomes a man -- seemingly at ease with love, with his sexuality, with his ghosts -- that the traumatic effects of that distant summer rise up to challenge his defiant assertion that he is happy and always has been.

Lots of people were on holiday this month so there weren't as many of us as usual - however, I was surprised at how much this novel was criticised by the group. Two of us loved it and found we wanted to read it again. We enjoyed Gale's style immensely and found the characters- if not entirely likeable- very interesting and complex. We found it to be a gripping story and thought provoking. The other members of the group were not so convinced. A couple found it too confusing to keep going back and forth between time periods. Others found the author padded out the plot too much and some just didn't empathise with the characters at all. One member thought Will was entirely selfish and showed a lack of guilt in his relationship with his brother in law, whilst I felt Will's lack of guilt stemmed from the tragic summer spent in Cornwall as a child and unresolved feelings of anger towards his 'sister' .
A great book for provoking discussion!

A good story but also covers relationships and tackles Alzheimer's as well. I enjoyed the different time periods in the story (the 1960's and present day) and the way it was tackled in alternate chapters.
