What I loved
In 1975 art historian Leo Hertzberg discovers an extraordinary painting by an unknown artist in a New York gallery. He buys the worm, tracks down its creator, Bill Weschler, and the two men embark on a life-long friendship.

This is the story of their intense and troubled relationship, of the women in their lives and their work, of art and hysteria, love and seduction and their sons - born the same year but whose lives take very different paths.

This book prompted probably one of the most lively and interesting discussions we've ever had. There was much debate about the themes of madness in the novel and the themes of conceptual art. Nearly all of us enjoyed the novel, most of us finding the second two parts of the novel much more gripping than the first part. The first part plods along rather but by the time you get to the second part it is well worth it and what emerges is a page turner with some very thought provoking ideas. The opening of part two completely changes the tone of the novel.
We liked Hustvedt's style but had a real debate about whether some of the themes she introduces are linked properly to the story. We also had a stimulating debate about how some conditions relate to what is happening in society at a given time.
A fantastic discussion and an excellent reading group book but do warn your readers not to give up on part one!
