A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

I have just finished Hosseini's second novel and I cannot stop raving about it to my friends and family! I very much enjoyed Kite Runner by Hosseini when I read it with my reading group, so decided to give his second novel a read, not expecting to enjoy it as much as Kite Runner. I was wrong! This book is so beautiful, so poignant, so surprising. Unlike Kite Runner it is told from a woman's perspective and I was gripped from the first page. It follows the lives of two Afghan females, both of whom have had very differeing childhood experiences- they are brought together in a quirk of fate and suffer together. I wont say too much else as I will spoil it for everyone else, but just to say it contains some of the most beautiful description you will ever read, some real plot twists that you wont be expecting and characters that you wont want to leave when you finish it. I enjoyed it so much I think the book will go down as being one of my all time favourites. Khaled Hosseini has a unique voice. We all hear about the terrible atrocities that have occured in Afghanistan but Hosseini has a way of describing life there pre-war that really makes you want to be there. I believe someone on the Wiki has made the point before that Hosseini paints the country as a real country and makes it more than just a war zone we hear about on the news. The beauty of his novels makes the current situation seem even more appalling and tragic- these people deserve so much more.

I agree. I read this recently and wept like a baby after closing the book. Hosseini is an excellent storyteller and I look foward to his next book with much anticipation.

Yes me too and I wonder if Splendid Suns will be turned into a film like Kite Runner was.
