Diverse opinions on this book

Most of the group found the book reasonably enjoyable; well written (if a trifle dated now) and startlingly descriptive and representative of life in steamy, corrupt West Africa. Some of us got annoyed with the heavy handed Catholic guilt theme as Scobie wrestled with his conscience whilst having an affair. His duty to his wife ultimately led him to make the greatest most pointless sacrifice of all; but quite frankly none of us gave a damn. Do you find this valuable?

I agree this novel is a difficult one. It took me 150 pages to get into it, but once I did, I found Scobie's struggle with his conscience quite gripping and found myself thinking about it after I'd finished it. It is well written and an excellent description of life then but you certainly have to perservere as there are a lot of characters and you do wonder where it is going. Do you find this valuable?
