The Odyssey: A review from Central Daytime Reading Group

We all agreed it is a great story and an undoubted classic. The originality of the characters and the description of the journey we found most effective. We pretty much all agreed though that it was a bit of a struggle as there are so many characters and the story is not told in a chronlogical fashion. We also felt that much had probably been lost in translation. Some members of the group remembered versions they read in the past that seemed much more evocative. Two of us cheated a bit and read an excellent children's version first by Geraldine McCaughrean which tells the tale of the journey itself. Do you find this valuable?
