1. The Secret River at the Prison Book Group
Nov 30 2009, 7:14 AM EST
I have to disagree with the person who describes this book as soooooo boringg - we read it at the Prison Book Group and everyone was raving about it! All without exception said it was a great read. Danny thought the marriage at the centre of the book was very romantic and found himself quite wistful about Sal! and there was a bit of a discussion as to whether such amazing women as Sal really existed. We decided it was important to believe that they did... Tony found the fact that the family remained intact throughout all the adventures was a little far-fetched ie that non of their many children every got sick or died, or Sal didn't die in childbirth, but he enjoyed the epic sweep of the book. Ray mentioned again the fact that the marriage was at the centre of the book and that they stayed close despite the terrible event that drove a wedge between them in an unspoken way. I personally found the account of the treatment of the aboriginals very distressing, but everyone else thought it could have been a lot worse. Altogether a colourful read which opens up a time in history in an interesting way. We would recommend it!Wendy-May Jacobs Prison Librarian 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
